As the food crisis and extreme climate events rage, the world focuses on ways to increase the very wheat imports that can cause dependency in the first place, leaving countries even more vulnerable, especially in the CWANA region. Yet, ICARDA’s new, climate-smart varieties of ‘neglected crops’ such as millet, barley, cowpea, tef, and others are hardy, climate-resilient, and highly nutritious. Dr. Amri presents their great potential to mitigate import dependency, and he discusses how the wheat/ barley flour mix for bread is gaining traction in the region.
