Science journalism training outside of academia: opportunities and challenges

English Track

Desciption

Science journalism academic programs are not widely available and can be quite expensive. This session will discuss the emergence of independent projects of science journalism training such as the Science Journalism Master Classes by The Open Notebook, the ICFJ Global Health Crisis Reporting Forum, and the video project Jornalismo Científico em 5 Minutos, by the Brazilian Network of Science Journalists and Communicators (RedeComCiência). More specifically, the presenters will discuss how to identify what resources journalists need to improve the quality of their science reporting, which is the best format to deliver this content, and how to fund those initiatives.
