About Janet Raloff

For more than 40 years, Janet Raloff has covered science and technology for the Science News Media Group. She was among the first reporters to give national visibility to such issues as electromagnetic-pulse weaponry and hormone-mimicking pollutants, and was the first globally to report on the widespread tainting of streams and groundwater sources with pharmaceuticals. In 2006, she assumed the role of editor-in-chief of Science News Explores, a free, daily online news magazine.

Aimed at adolescents, their families and educators, it covers everything from quantum mechanics and cognitive neuroscience to climate science and the tech behind generative AI. With a background in physics, Raloff garnered undergraduate and graduate degrees from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. She is active in the Society of Environmental Journalists, which she helped found, and the National Association of Science Writers.

Her writing has won awards from a number of organizations, including the Free Press Association and Council for the Advancement of Science Writing. And the stories her publication runs are now regularly winning Kavli awards for excellence in science journalism written for children and adolescents.
