What tools can be used to confirm the quality of the information?

Portuguese Track

Desciption

Long gone are the days when there was no internet in the newsrooms nor in the hands of journalists, and when any search for information or contacts was time-consuming. Now, with only a few clicks we are flooded with a torrent of content that it is close to impossible to fully explore. In the midst of this excess of information, journalists (and citizens) must be able to distinguish valid and trustworthy information from mis- and disinformation, to distinguish credible sources from false experts, and to bring the best possible information to their audiences.

Anyone can produce content and share it on the internet and social networks: some will be useful and true, others will have small mistakes, some will be misleading even without harmful intentions, but others will clearly be an attempt to manipulate information. How can journalists filter the good information from the bad?

Mis- and disinformation has existed for ages, but current technological advances have made the process of recognizing manipulated photographs, video edits or fake websites that mimic trustworthy sources more difficult. The evolution of artificial intelligence has made it an even more complex task to distinguish false, erroneous or misleading content. But in this process of parallel evolution, there are also teams that work daily to identify false content, detect the strategies used by those who promote disinformation and create tools to counteract it.
In this panel discussion, SciComPt will discuss the strategies and tools that are available to journalists so they can collect quality information and avoid falling into disinformation traps. Also, a short guide will be produced with the main resources described.
